Kintsugi (Japanese Art of Repairing Broken Pottery) Workshop

Kintsugi is a Japanese pottery repair technique that is believed to be originated in the beginning of the 15th century. The steps of Kintsugi includes adhering the broken pieces together with a lacquer-based mixture, removing extra lacquer after drying, applying red paint onto the cracks, then dusting gold powder onto the cracks. Kintsugi turns what is treated as broken into beautiful, which also embodies the Japanese concept of Wabi-sabi that embraces the unexpected in life and the beauty in brokenness.

Tutor: Enders Wong
Artist and pottery collector, has learnt Kintsugi for more than 10 years. Enders frequently travels to Japan and Taiwan to learn from masters, as well as teaches students in Hong Kong. Enders believes that Kintsugi preserves the original form of the pottery and transforms what is broken into beautiful.
